Trafficking Routes and Networks

The illegal action requires crossing borders without permission as well with the guidance of networks that seek to gain money. By taking into consideration geographical situations, political climates, and conflicts. Knowing the existence of other routes, there are 8 major routes;

  1. Mediterranean Sea Route: The route that is notorious for its high mortality begins from North Africa and the Middle East for the sake of reaching Europe. Departing countries are mostly Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt.

  2. Eastern Mediterranean Route: Beginning from countries such as Turkiye and Lebanon, refugees are seeking to cross the Aegean Sea and reach Greece's borders so they can continue their journey through the Balkans in order to get to Western and Northern Europe.

  3. Balkan Route: In order to use the Balkan Route, refugees shall cross countries such as Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. This route has been one of the most efficient for refugees in the Middle East and South Asia.

  4. Western African Route: Refugees shall use the paths of countries like Niger and Mali. A transit is expected in Algeria and Libya before sea crossing.

  5. Central Asian Route: Refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and some other Central Asian Countries use the path by crossing the borders of Turkiye and Iran to arrive in Greece.

  6. Southeast Asian Route: The Andaman Sea route is a notable path used by the traffickers. Mostly refugees from Myanmar or Bangladesh use the route.

  7. Mexico-United States Route: Refugees from Central Africa, particularly Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, immigrate to the United States in search of asylum.

  8. Horn of Africa-Arabian Peninsula Route: Refugees from countries such as Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea try to cross the Red Sea or the Gulf of Aden in order to reach Saudi Arabia or Yemen.
