Previous Attempts

The UN’s Attempts

  • The UN has declared a reduction in the budget for Rohingya’s food assistance from US$12 to US$8 that will be imposed from March 2023

  • In December 2018, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) formulated a plan of action for the Rohingya crisis which resulted in being boycotted by both China and Russia.

The Bali Declaration and India

  • The Indian government who once accepted to be a part of the Bali declaration has been refusing to acknowledge the article. The Indian government said the proposed reference to the violence in Rakhine state in the declaration was inappropriate. The move came following the Indian government's recent decision to deport nearly 40,000 Rohingya refugees from the country.

Statements of the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights:

  • Encouraging the Bangladesh Government to step up to provide refuge to more than 1 million Rohingya refugees through this protracted crisis. Commending countries in the region, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand for allowing safe disembarkation and provision of protection and humanitarian assistance to Rohingya who arrived by boat.

  • The 2023 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis in Bangladesh is severely underfunded. Calling upon the international community to provide robust and sustained support to Rohingya refugees.
